In today’s world, no one can deny the existence of major global refugee crisis. In 2022, these crises are even more pronounced, with an estimated 70.8 million individuals forcibly displaced from their homes owing to hostility and persecution.

With an ever-increasing number of people displaced by conflict, political unrest, and persecution worldwide, 2022 is certain to bring with it its share of refugee crises.

1. Syria

The Syrian refugee crisis is among the worst seen in recent years.

In 2022, an estimated 5.6 million refugees fled the country due to ongoing conflict and violence. The 2011-starting Syrian Civil War, and is still ongoing, has resulted in countless Syrians’ deaths, displacement, and destruction. 

2. Ukraine

In 2022, the country faced a number of political, economic, and security issues due to the Russian invasion of the country started on February 24, that caused a large influx of refugee. The majority of refugees were from the eastern part of the country, where a protracted conflict between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists had been ongoing since 2014.

The violence, displacement, and destruction caused by the conflict created an unsustainable environment for many people, leading to millions of people seeking refuge in neighbor countries.

3. Afghanistan

The refugee crisis in Afghanistan has been an ongoing problem and has had far-reaching consequences on the lives of many Afghans.

According to UNHCR, the number of refugees in Afghanistan has surpassed two million. These refugees are largely composed of internally displaced persons who were compelled to leave their homes due to insecurity caused by the nation’s continuing war. Most refugees are from rural areas, mostly coming from the country’s northern provinces of Kunar and Nuristan.

4. South Sudan

As of 2022, South Sudan has been facing a refugee crisis for nearly two years. More than 1.6 million people have been forced to flee the country since the civil war broke out in 2013. The vast majority of these people are women and children.

The standard of living has been significantly reduced as a result of the civil war for South Sudanese citizens, with levels of violence and displacement increasing each year. Since the beginning of 2020, more than 900,000 people have been newly displaced as a result of the conflict. This figure includes both internally displaced persons (IDPs) and those who have been compelled to seek asylum in other nations.

5. The Rohingya crisis

The Rohingya Crisis is a humanitarian disaster that has been ongoing since 2017. Over 700,000 Rohingya refugees fled their homes in Myanmar to Bangladesh due to extreme violence and persecution.

6. Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing one of the world’s worst refugee crises in 2022, with an estimated 5.2 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and about 755,000 refugees.

This situation has been exacerbated by political unrest, the conflict between armed groups, and the spread of deadly diseases such as Ebola, which has had a devastating effect on the population.

7. Sudan

As of 2022, there are more than 1.7 million refugees and internally displaced persons in Sudan. The majority of them come from the conflict-ridden Darfur region.

Another effect of the ongoing civil war in South Sudan is the flood of refugees in Sudan, with many more expected to arrive in the coming months and years.

In 2022, approximately 2.7 million people in Somalia will remain displaced due to violence and civil unrest.

The Central African Republic (CAR) is facing a complex refugee crisis in 2022. According to the United Nations, an estimated 535,000 People were evicted from their homes due to the ongoing conflict in CAR.

These internally displaced people make up nearly a quarter of the population. Additionally, there are over 600,000 refugees from the Central African Republic in neighboring countries. Furthermore, around 40 percent of these IDPs are children, many of whom are especially vulnerable and in need of urgent support.

10. Eritrea

The refugee crisis in Eritrea has reached an alarming level in 2022. According to the UN Refugee Agency, there are over 443,000 refugees in the country due to human rights abuses and economic insecurity. This number continues to grow as more individuals flee the nation in search of safety and stability.

What actions are necessary to deal with refugee crises around the globe?

In order to effectively address the global crises currently facing our world, a range of actions needs to be taken.

These include increased investment in global health systems and research, strengthening global trade policies and governance frameworks, implementing sustainable development initiatives across all countries, tackling climate change, and reducing global poverty
