The government of a nation regularly issues passports to its citizens as a means of travel. A person uses their passport as identification and proof of nationality when traveling abroad. Include vital identifying information such as name, place of birth, date of birth, photo, and signature on a passport.

Different countries have their own passports. Passports are thus ranked based on the highest mobility they offer to passport holders.

Whether possessing a passport allows them to travel to the maximum number of countries is a major factor in ensuring ranking passports. Let’s explore the top 7 most powerful passports in the world.

How are passports ranked?

The Henley Passport Index releases a major passport ranking to measure the strength of passports. Their Global Passport Ranking is an extremely authoritative way to rank countries and their passport strength.

The Henley Passport Index uses the data collected by International Air Transport Association (IATA). It assesses 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations. It calculates the number of destinations a passport holder can access without a visa.

The IATA database compares all 227 potential travel locations to each of the 199 passports in the list and adjusts the score throughout the year as circumstances change. To obtain the final score, a number of criteria must be satisfied.

Some countries are classified as eTA countries. An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to a country by air.

The Mobility Score (MS) of a certain passport reveals the total number of nations it can reach. This sum is computed using the number of Visa-free, Visa-on-arrival, eTA, and eVisas issued in the previous three days.
