The most watched YouTube videos of 2022: old hits and a few surprises

With a growth of 11.83% in 2022 alone, and more than 2 billion registered users, YouTube is again the second most used platform in the social network landscape.

The flourishing of new content creators and the simple and intuitive interface of this social network make it an excellent platform for sharing and consuming video content.

In this article, we take a look at which are the most watched YouTube videos of 2022!

The most watched YouTube videos in 2022

1. “Baby Shark Dance” – Pinkfong Kids Songs&Stories

With a shocking 9.2 billion views, Baby Shark remains in first place again this year – also making it the most watched YouTube video ever. Children’s content on this platform is going strong!

The popularity is probably attributable to the fact that – unlike many channels that churn out similar content – here we have real children as protagonists, and not just animations. The perfect mix is achieved thanks to a catchy melody and simple, fun choreography.

2. “Despacito” – Luis Fonsi ft. Daddy Yankee

Beyond children’s content, music videos remain one of the most popular categories on YouTube. Despacito boasts over 8 billion views, despite being a decidedly ‘old’ song by 2010s’ commercial standards: it came out in 2017!

Maybe it’s the upbeat and sensual video, the Puerto Rican settings and the presence of Miss Universe 2006, Zuleyeka Rivera, Despacito remains a classic that will stay with us for many years to come.

3. “Johny Johny Yes Papa” – LooLoo Kids

In third place we again find a children’s nursery rhyme. With 6.5 billion views, “Johny Johny Yes Papa” had become, in 2018, a hilarious meme bounced around the various social platforms.

Today, however, it is the third most popular video on YouTube: here, success is achieved through the use of a well-known melody – that of the “Lullaby” – and a funny, uncomplicated storyline that any child can follow.

4. “Shape of You” – Ed Sheeran

“Shape of You” – released in 2017 – is one of the most listened to songs of all time, with over 5 billion views on YouTube. Holding the ninth spot on Billboard’s Hot 100, this track is also the most played song on Spotify in 10′.

It also represents the precise moment when the songwriter, Ed Sheeran, began experimenting with more pop and less indie sounds, officially approaching mainstream audiences.

5. “See You Again” – Wix Khalifa ft. Charie Puth

The tribute to Paul Walker certainly achieved the desired result: to carry the name of the actor – who died tragically in a car accident – around the world, while at the same time churning out an enjoyable and relaxing hit that would capture the audience’s attention.

The simple video clip and nostalgic melody made this the fifth most consumed piece of content in 2022, and propelled it to the number one spot in several months of 2017.

6. “Bath Song” – CoComelon Nursery Rhymes & Kids Songs

And here we are again, talking about a YouTube Kids video, a symbol of an increasingly smart generation that has grown up with technology.

The success of these videos is in fact attributable to a trend that sees this type of content as real educational material, used by parents to teach their children and entertain them at the same time.

7. “Phonics Song with TWO Words” – A For Apple ABC

Yes, another children’s video in the top ten videos with the most views on YouTube: in this case, it is a video useful for learning the alphabet.

There are plenty of them on the platform, but this one turns out to be a favourite among parents and children.

8. “Uptown Funk” – Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars

This hit from 2014 is still one of the most watched on YouTube in 2022. The video with retro accents perfectly matches the 80′ feel of the song itself, and the catchy melody still makes it one of the most listened to songs ever!

The video was also awarded Best Male Video at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.

9. “Learning Colors” – Colourful Eggs on a Farm

Called the creepiest children’s YouTube video ever, Learning Colors has gained – probably also due to its skewed popularity – over 4.4 billion views! To the tune of ‘Old Farm’, six eggs teach children the names of colours… in various languages.

10. “Gangnam Style” – PSY

Yes, in 2022 we are still watching Gangnam Style on YouTube! The hugely popular 2012 hit was the first to receive over a billion views, and is still streamed by millions of people around the world.
