All the companies of Elon Musk and what they do

Oluwatosin Jegede

We all know about Tesla, the revolutionary car company led by Elon Musk. However, as a founding member of PayPal and the CEO of SpaceX—both companies he founded with his brother Kimbal—Elon is also a pretty big deal in the tech world.

So let’s take a minute to talk about some other companies led by Elon Musk and what they do, shall we?

All the companies owned by Elon Musk

Tesla

Tesla is an American automaker and energy storage company based in Palo Alto, California. The coy was founded in 2003 by Marc Tarpenning and Martin Eberhard. The company also considers Elon Musk their founder, even though he didn’t join until 2004.

Tesla is known for making all-electric cars and vehicles with semi-autonomous capabilities (via Tesla Autopilot). They’ve created many car models, including: The Model S sedan (first released in 2012), the Model X SUV (first released in 2015), the Model 3 sedan (first released in 2017), and a new Roadster sports car announced in 2019.

The Model S won numerous awards, including “Motor Trend Car of the Year” in 2013, “World Green Car Of The Year” in 2014, “Car And Driver Ten Best” from 2008 through 2020.

SolarCity

SolarCity is a solar power company bought out by Tesla in 2016. It is run by Elon Musk’s cousin, Lyndon Rive. SolarCity’s main product is solar panels placed on the roof to generate clean electricity for homes and businesses.

SolarCity also makes solar roof tiles, which look like normal roofing material but capture sunlight and convert it into electricity. It is more durable than asphalt shingles.

The company’s business model varies from region to region. Generally, it involves leasing or financing solar panels for residential and commercial properties and installing them directly on those properties.

SpaceX

Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, which is a space transportation company. The company has launched over 100 successful missions. It became the first private company to launch and recover a spacecraft from orbit. On May 25th, 2012, SpaceX became the first commercial car to dock with the International Space Station when their Dragon spacecraft attached to it.

In addition to being an aerospace manufacturer and launch system developer, SpaceX also develops high-profile projects with NASA, like making rockets reusable by landing them back on earth after they’ve been used for space travel.

The Boring Company

The Boring Company is a tunneling startup founded by Elon Musk, initially as a tongue-in-cheek joke. The company has since been given an official license from the State of California to build a test tunnel, with plans to extend it beyond SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne and towards Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The tunnel will be used for testing equipment and developing new technologies that could someday be used for a Hyperloop mass transit system connecting cities on both sides of the USA-Mexico border. If successful, it would reduce travel time between San Diego and Tijuana by almost half.

OpenAI and Neuralink

Neuralink is a separate company aiming to create brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), allowing us to communicate directly with machines. They’ve formed a partnership with OpenAI and its co-founder, Sam Altman, who serves as both companies’ advisors.

OpenAI is a nonprofit AI research company founded by Elon Musk and Y Combinator’s Sam Altman in 2015. The researchers at OpenAI develop algorithms that can be used across industries and fields—from healthcare to transportation—to solve problems in ways they couldn’t before.

Twitter

On October 27th, 2022, Musk bought Twitter for $44bn. Musk said in a statement that he believes Twitter has the potential to be the “most impactful” way to improve people’s lives and change the world. The deal was closed on November 12th, 2022, after regulatory approval was granted by the SEC and FTC. Musk has also said that Twitter will remain independent from SpaceX and Tesla, though he is the largest shareholder and his brother Kimbal Musk will be one of the board members.

Elon Musk, what are the next steps of the entrepreneur and its companies

Elon Musk is a man of many hats. He’s the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, chairman of SolarCity, and founder of Neuralink Corp.

You might be surprised by how much Elon Musk has going on, but you probably shouldn’t be. He’s been making headlines since he was a teenager with his first company Zip2.
