Donald Trump, it is indictment day for the former US president: what we know and what comes next

Elizabeth Smith

It is the day when former U.S. President Donald Trump is due to appear in court in New York over his indictment over Stormy Daniels case. Last night, aboard his plane, Trump left his Florida residence and arrived in New York.

Today will be the first hearing in the Prosecutor’s Office for the president who will have to answer according to the prosecution’s arguments for a series of crimes. If there are no schedule slippages the hearing is expected to be held at 2:15 p.m., New York time.

Donald Trump is already in New York and in his Trump Tower

Donald Trump is already in New York where the hearing in which the former president is allegedly charged with several criminal offenses will take place today. Trump in New York met with his lawyers, and the former president continued to fire back at his accusers.

He attacked Manhattan prosecutor Alvin Bragg, who in his view should “resign” and should be “indicted.”

Also noteworthy about the hearing is that Judge Juan Merchan, granting the request of the former U.S. president’s lawyers, decided that cameras will not be allowed in the courtroom where the hearing will take place. American networks had asked to be allowed to film it but the judge said no.

Donald Trump in court, what happens today

Donald Trump has been indicted by the Manhattan grand jury. The charges are related to the payment in exchange for her silence of porn star Stormy Daniels. Who had threatened to reveal that she had an affair with the tycoon during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Although one of his lawyers, Joe Tacopina states: “We have not yet seen the indictment and the charges. We know the subject and the basis of the charges. But we don’t know exactly the charges and how they are worded”.

Trump is the first former president indicted in American history. It is also learned from U.S. sources that Donald Trump will not be handcuffed.

Donald Trump also attacks U.S. President Joe Biden

After leaving the resort in Mar-a-Lago, Florida Trump flew to New York where he landed at LaGuardia Airport. Also with him on the flight was his son Eric.

Donald Trump attacked not only the magistrates. But also the current president who beat him in the last presidential election, Joe Biden.

Needless to say, tensions are high in the United States for today. The area of New York’s “Trump Tower” on New York’s Fifth Avenue is armored by police. And, flown over by a couple of helicopters.

There is confidence, however, on the part of President Joe Biden about the maintenance of law and order. “I have confidence in the New York Police Department”, said last night Joe Biden, in response to a CNN reporter who asked him if he feared riots in New York in the Donald Trump indictment hearing.

Who is Alvin Bragg, Trump’s accuser

Alvin Bragg is the accuser of former President Donald Trump. A 49-year-old Democrat elected in November 2021, he officially indicted Trump for paying $130,000, shortly before his victory in the 2016 presidential election, to hard-core actress Stormy Daniels.

Meanwhile, Trump hired a new attorney yesterday for his ‘battle’ with Manhattan prosecutors over the $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. He is Todd Blanche, a white-collar crime lawyer who joins the large ranks of defense attorneys.

Trump presidential campaign, raised more than $5 million

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign, meanwhile, said it had raised more than $5 million in the 48 hours after being notified of the indictment related to paying money to conceal their relationship before the 2016 election campaign.

“Poll after poll shows that this political persecution by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has sparked tremendous support for President Trump,” campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said.

“More than $5 million in donations and more than 16,000 volunteer registrations since the announcement of this witch hunt hoax are key indicators that Americans of all backgrounds are sick and tired of the weaponization deployed by the court system against President Trump and his supporters.”
