Iceland, historic women’s strike: what are the reasons

What’s happening in Iceland

It last happened in 1975 but now it is ready to come back bigger than ever. We are talking about the strike in Iceland organized by women and nonbinary people against gender-based violence in the workplace.

Thousands of people will be ready to take to the streets to defend their rights, many times violated, and of all those who are victims of this ungrateful situation.

Fifty years ago, also in Iceland, there was a national mobilization of all women in the country. With the aim of highlighting their importance in the industry, which is often underestimated.

Although Iceland ranks among the best countries in terms of gender equality, there are equally internal problems that need to be solved, and the planned demonstration is a sign of that.

The labor situation in Iceland: what is happening in the country

The nevertheless rosy situation compared to other countries does not relieve Iceland from solving some problems. Among which women’s rights at work are included.

Strike organizers, in fact, revealed the pay gap between men and women of about 21 percent.

Although a law was established in 2017 requiring companies to award equal pay to men and women, strike organizers are calling for more clarity and transparency on the issue.

Also participating in the strike are prominent figures from Iceland who have no shortage of support for women’s rights at every opportunity.

Supporting the large strike planned in Iceland are also prominent personalities in the country.

Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir has already revealed her support, together with many other female ministers and government representatives.
