10 steps to become more eco-friendly in daily life

Oluwatoni Olujinmi

Living an eco-friendly lifestyle can be difficult at times, but it is worth it! By making small changes in your everyday life, you can help save the environment and become more sustainable.

From cutting down on food waste to using reusable bags, these steps will help you follow through with the effort of going green.

Below are 10 steps you can incorporate to be eco-friendly in your everyday life and have a greater impact on the environment.

10 Steps to become eco-friendly in everyday life

1. Plant trees

Forest areas have significantly decreased in the last two decades due to large-scale deforestation.

Moreover, trees are essential for our survival. They purify the air, produce fruit, provide shelter to animals, control floods, and they also stop soil erosion.

To save the ecosystem and enhance air quality, more individuals and organizations must ensure that native trees are being planted to replace those that have been cut down and used for construction.

2. Stop littering

People leaving trash on the roads is a common sight we encounter every day in the streets. The street litter mess ruins the city’s visual beauty and pollutes the atmosphere.

However, construction and demolition sites, residences, businesses, pedestrians, and moving vehicles are all potential sources of litter. Littering can have serious effects on the local tourism sector, animals, and ecology.

It’s our responsibility to keep the environment and our surroundings clean.

3. Stop food wastage

Wastage of food isn’t just a huge waste of money and resources, it increases the quantity of CO2 produced in landfills.

Additionally, every time you throw them out, the organic material ends up in the world’s garbage can, producing greenhouse gases like methane.

Avoid throwing away food that is still edible to reduce food wastage. By preparing, serving, or ordering only what will be eaten and making sure there is no waste, you can significantly improve the situation.

4. Use LED light bulbs

Compared to conventional incandescent bulbs, modern technology has produced light bulbs that are vastly more efficient.

LED light bulbs outperform traditional bulbs in terms of both durability and efficiency. This will result in you using less energy and requiring fewer light bulb replacements.

Additionally, they come in a variety of brightness levels and styles, allowing you to truly customize the lighting to your needs or the beauty of the room.

5. Go green and plant a garden

Going green is crucial to living an eco-friendly lifestyle. Things start to break down when there isn’t a healthy ecology.

You could save energy and keep your home cool even in the hottest summer months by creating a shaded garden around your house. Plant little trees in the vicinity of your home, and only cut trees when essential.

Also, engage with community environmental organizations to increase tree planting and raise awareness of the benefits.

6. Don’t consume as much meat

Did you know that more than 30% of the Earth’s surface is dedicated to cattle raising?  The production of cattle results in a considerable amount of greenhouse gas emissions that harm the earth’s environment and cause global warming.

The key to becoming more eco-friendly is to be mindful of what you eat. Nevertheless, reducing your meat intake can make a significant difference.

Reducing the amount of meat consumed benefits the environment by reducing the size of the livestock business.  Eating a healthy diet that includes grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables can help reduce emissions while also providing nutrients and pleasure.

7. Try to cut out plastic

Considering how universal plastic seems to be in our lives, it might be difficult for you to stop using it.

However, numerous advantages come with reducing our plastic trash, not the least of which is the protection of the environment, the preservation of natural resources, and financial savings.

Making simple changes like carrying a reusable bag with you when you shop, buying products in bulk, and forgoing bottled water can have a significant impact.

8. Save water

Since it takes a lot of energy to pump water from rivers or lakes into your home, it is important to save water. Water conservation lowers the energy required to filter it.

Starting with personal responsibility, prudent drainage, and a water supply system that lessens the impacts of global warming is essential.

A few simple ways like fixing leakages, using water-saving appliances, taking short showers instead of tub baths, and using the toilet responsibly can reduce your daily water consumption.

9. Compost

Rather than trashing your wasted food in the bin, composting has a substantial impact.

Organic waste in landfills breakdown anaerobically producing methane, a potent greenhouse gas. However, composting wasted food and other organic substances reduce the emission of methane and carbon output to the environment.

Not only does it reduces the amount of waste going to landfills, but it can also be converted to rich nutrient food for plants that help them grow, which eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers.

10. Recycling

Recycling is essential for reducing carbon emissions, helping to maintain a sustainable environment, and promoting a healthy environment. It reduces the need to grow or extract raw materials as they can be used as resources in the production of new products.

Nearly everything may be recycled, including wood, paper, plastics, metals, and glass. Consider recycling it for a moment rather than throwing it in the trash.
